Lot Essay

Like lot 132, this superbly hollowed cloud-agate bottle illustrates the enormous appeal of plain agate snuff bottles. The markings in this bottle resembles the experience of looking down upon the famous 'Sea of Clouds' from the peaks of Huangshan. For a similar example where the effect is discussed, see H. Moss, V. Graham, K.B. Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Hong Kong, 1998, vol. 2, Quartz, no. 258.
