Comprising: twenty-two various medals, most in their original fitted cases; thirty-four silver-plated presentation and souvenir spoons, various dates and makers, and some examples belonging to Francis Newton Heron Widdrington; a cast-pewter glass-bottomed tankard by Crown & Rose, London, engraved 'E.A.F.W./Magpies/3333333 = 21'; two Stowe School blazers; a paperweight of The Cape Peninsula commemorating The British Rifle Team vs. Cape Province, (W.A.) 2 Dec. 1937, for the second highest score in the British Team won by Edward Anthony Fitzherbert Widdrington; and six black and white photographs of Edward and his contemporaries

Lot Essay

Major Edward Antony Fitzherbert Widdrington, M.C., (1914-1944), served with the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. In early 1944 he was part of Operation Pomegranate, an SAS four-man raid on the Italian Airfield San Edigio. Only Widdrington and Lt. Quentin Hughes were able to reach the target planting bombs on seven aircraft. One of the remaining bombs detonated whilst being made safe and killed Widdrington. For his actions during this raid he was awarded a posthumous Military Cross.
