The coat-of-arms on the front in black enamel and gilt on mantling of iron-red, grisaille and gilt scrollwork, all reserved on a colorful field of verte-Imari flowering stems bearing curling leaves, a band of cell pattern around the rim, the flowers repeated on the flat cover

Lot Essay

Made either for the Rt. Hon. James Craggs, M.P., who was deeply involved in the South Sea Bubble scandal, or his son James, who succeeded him as M.P. for Tregony and became a member of the Privy Council in 1718. Both died in 1721. See D.S. Howard, op. cit., pp. 183-4
