Lot Essay

The Lady Torfrida portrayed above was the first of three ocean-going yachts of the same name built for Mr. (later Sir) William Pearce, one of the directors of Fairfield's [formerly John Elder & Co.], the prestigious Glasgow ship-builders. Constructed in their own yards and registered at 400 tons gross (174 1/2 net), she measured
205 1/5 feet in length with a 25 1/2 foot beam, and was powered by one of Elder's 3-cylinder engines in additon to her Ratsey & Lapthorn sails. Sold by Pearce when his new steam yacht was completed in 1888, the original Lady Torfrida was renamed Tamara and passed into the ownership of H.H.H. The grand Duke Alexander of Russia, husband of Tsar Nicholas II's sister Xenia.
