'Bavelaartjes' are small dioramas, carved in wood or bone, placed behind glass, often depicting landscapes or genre scenes. Famous for making this kind of pieces from the late 18th century onward was the Bavelaar family from Leiden. Their family-name eventually became the general name used for this kind of objects. Cf.
