A Fine and Impressive Ivory Cabinet
Meiji Period (late 19th century)
The cabinet with various-sized hinged doors, sliding doors, drawers and a roller door, each finely carved with various scenes including monkeys among peaches, children playing games, monkeys and octopus, sennin and dragons, and insects among flowers and foliage, the shelves with shippo-hanabishi, square tiles and geometric designs, the back and side panels pierced with flowers, foliage and vine, all bordered with a frame of squirrels among grapevine, their eyes inlaid in light cowhorn, the exterior with an intricate woven bamboo design in ivory, the feet with further bamboo squirrels and vine, nashiji interiors
