Lot Essay

It is extremely rare to find a brushpot of this design covered in a transparent glaze, as comparable examples are more often found with celadon glaze such as the celadon-glazed brushpot with moulded lotus scroll design and with an apocryphal Chenghua mark, in the J. M. Hu Family Collection, sold in New York, 4 June 1985, lot 27. Another, also with scrolling lotus, was sold in our New York Rooms, 19 September 1996, lot 303. A brushpot with a design of dragons amidst foliage from the British Rail Pension Fund, was sold in these Rooms, 27 April 1997, lot 725.
