This very rare subject is otherwise unrecorded. By the Daoguang period, the tradition of giving snuff bottles as gifts had probably become firmly established for Emperor and recipients alike. The present Imperial snuff bottle was probably made in a small series as part of a much larger order, of which only this one has so far come to light.
