A fine early 18th-Century French graphometer,

The protractor is graduated 0-180° with ½° subdivisions. The signature is engraved on the limb, which has a sight at either end. The alidade arm has an engraved scroll motif at the centre and a vernier and sight at either end, each vernier graduated 0-60 and 0-15-30, with a fleur-de-lys for zero. The centre of the protractor has an engraved scroll-shaped frame around the glazed compass case. The compass is graduated around the circumference 0-180° (x2) with 1° subdivisions, with an eight-pointed wind rose and blued-iron needle. There is a ball and socket joint to a staff mounting on the reverse, which is raised on a turned fruitwood column and a stepped circular base.
