INDIA, MID-17TH CENTURY

A jade box of identical shape and size (14cm. high) from the Heeramaneck Collection, carved with a very similar floral theme can be dated to the reign of Shah Jahan, circa mid-17th century (Stuart cary Welch, The Art of Mughal India, Painting & Precious Objects, New York, 1976, cat.55, p.55 and p.171). Although slightly finer in the naturalistic aspect of the flowers carved on the lid, the Heeramaneck box supports our mid-17th century dating.
