Of standard rounded rectangular form set on four bracket feet, the lid inset with a panel of pale green-brown shibuichi with silver relief decoration and variegated patination representation Mount Fuji partially obscured by cloud, the sides with a few engraved wave motifs, the interior of the lid engraved with the aoi mon [hollyhock crest] of the Tokugawa family, the remaining surfaces plain silver, signed on the lid with engraved characters Katsuhide koku [engraved by Katsuhide] and with a gold-inlaid seal Katsu, stamped on one of the long sides with a seal Katsuhide no in [seal of Katsuhide]; with fitted wood box

Ito Katsuhide is said to have become a pupil of the great Unno Shomin in 18901 and Shomin himself is known to have made several boxes of this type in collaboration with the Hattori Company (see Lot 172), starting in about 1895.
