                                            A FINE SMALL-SWORD WITH SILVER-GILT HILT 
Rome silver mark for 1700-1718
With earlier slender rapier blade with central fuller on each face of the forte stamped 'Anthonio Pichinio (sic)', the heavy hilt cast and chased in relief with foliated scrolls framing swags of fruit and flowers held by naked putti, and cherubs' heads with formalised wings, struck on the knuckle-guard with two marks, and later(?) wooden grip bound with silver-gilt ribbon and plaited wire, indistinct silversmith's mark of Antonio Politi (recorded 1703-1747)
