The combination of bats (fu) and peaches (shoutao) forms the rebus fushou shuangquan, or 'May you possess both blessings and longevity'.

Compare another jade peach box and cover with interlocking branches joining the two halves in the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated by M. Wilson, Chinese Jades, London, 2004, p. 56, no. 58, where the author notes that this group of carvings is very impressive from a technical point of view because of the great precision that would have been involved for the two halves of the box to fit together so perfectly. See, also, another white jade peach box and cover, although without the interlocking stems which join the upper and lower portions, sold in these rooms, 24-25 March 2011, lot 1536.
