Signed Yukasai, Edo Period (Late 18th-Early 19th Century)
Almost rectangular with attached himotoshi; four cases, gold lacquer ground decorated in gold, silver and coloured hiramaki-e, compartments and risers gold nashiji, shoulders and rims gold fundame, signed with gold hiramaki-e on the base Yukasai, slight fading

On one side Kikujido the Chysanthemum Boy, with his characteristic long hair and richly brocaded Chinese robes; on the other side seven chrysanthemums

Lot Essay

Although Wrangham suggests that this artist worked in the 19th century, Speiser and the Tomkinson catalogue may well be correct in placing at least some of his work in the 18th century.1
