Carpeaux's original bronze bust carried the inscription 'A mon ami Beauvois. B. Carpeaux, Valenciennes, 1862. Non ultimato' and was cast by Victor Thiebaud who ran the family foundry from 1851-1870. It was purchased by M. Foucart at the sale of Beauvois' estate in 1879 and given to the Louvre in 1884. The plaster model was exhibited a number of times, firstly at the Exposition Universelle of 1867 and lastly at the Exposition centennale de l'art Français in 1900 (no.1505). Beauvois was a prominent notary in Valenciennes.
