Lot Essay

The bust of Socrates, with the lyre, a symbol of harmony, poetry and musical inspiration, and the laurel wreath, regarded as an emblem of victory or success, both on a plinth-supported altar drum, illustrate his idea of intellectual and moral improvement as a path to personal enlightenment.
