Charles Cressent designed a number of very distinctive commodes which have now been identified in the catalogue raisonné compiled by Alexandre Pradère. The present model appeared in a group of only ten examples classified as Les commodes à doubles crosses en S et chutes de fleurs (A. Pradère, Charles Cressent, Dijon, 2003, pp. 283-5), including one supplied to Jean-Baptiste de Machault d'Arnouville (d. 1794).

Frédéric-Louis Durand, son of Gervais-Maximilien-Eugène Durand, collaborated with his father and ultimately succeeded him in 1920. He is recorded as having worked at 8 rue du Petit-Musée until 1933 when he moved to 10 rue des Lions.
