Possibly representing Louis XIV versus Louis XVI, the queens as Marie Thérèse and Maire-Antoinette, the bishops as courtiers, the knights as Cavalry flag bearers and trumpeters, the pawns as infantry men

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
Victor Keats,IIllustrated Guide to World Chess Sets, Batsford Ltd, 1985, page 115-117. A similar set is illustrated in plate 30 depicting chessmen on the theme of Charles I of England versus Louis XIII of France.
A similar set with a closely related king and queen on the white side was sold Chrisitie's, South Kensington The Allen Hofrichter Collection of Chess Sets, 20 September 2000, lot 133.
This type of set is associated with a 'Paris' school of carving by collectors, although no direct source has yet been discovered. They bear similar characteristics, with the subjects based on quasi-historical themes, the paintwork slightly distressed, and carved with a slightly naive hand but with an overall charming effect.
