It is interesting that the present marble is signed by Henry Dasson as his atelier was chiefly known in the late 19th century for the high quality furniture and objets d’art it produced. The firm’s output was particularly distinguished by its fine, sculpture-like ormolu mounts, so it is perhaps not surprising that the atelier would have also made and sold the occasional marble, such as the present charming group. An additional bronze group of a sea nymph and a putto signed by Henry Dasson was sold Christie’s, London, 22 September 2011, lot 88, proving that the atelier’s work in sculpture extended to other media, as well.
