The padded back and seat covered in gros and petit-point embroidery depicting flowering vases, on acanthus and scroll-carved cabriole legs and scrolled feet, blue chalk inscription to one rail '76A'

Lot Essay

Popularly described as a 'French Chair' in mid-18th century pattern-books issued by Thomas Chippendale and others, the present chair is conceived in the George II French/antique manner, The present lot appears to be a proficient but regional example of a mid-18th century London made chair. Reminiscent of the work of firms such as Paul Saunders, the construction and use of elm, suggest a local firm who were aware of London designs and manufacture.
