The rounded rectangular top with re-entrant corners, decorated with shells, strapwork and foliage on a pounced ground, above a Vitruvian- scroll frieze, above an eagle with outspread wings, on a later rectangular plinth with foliate-carved edge, with sides supports of scrolling foliage with satyr's legs with cloven hooves on later rectangular plinths with foliate-carved edge, the lower part of the side brackets replaced, the top probably original to the table, regilt and restorations to gesso

Lot Essay

This form of table, featuring Jupiter's eagle flanked by bacchic satyr feet in the George II 'Roman' fashion promoted by the artist/architect William Kent (d. 1748), appears on a sideboard-table at St. Giles's House, Dorset (R. Edwards, The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1964, p. 586, fig. 33).
