Oval with shaped rim and leaf-capped scroll handle, on stepped oval pedestal foot, one side engraved with crest and coronet, the other with coat-of-arms

The arms are those of John Perceval, 1st Earl of Egmont, co. Cork.

Lot Essay


Born in 1683 John Perceval succeeded his brother to become 5th baronet in 1691.
He served as MP for Cork 1703-15, being created Baron Perceval 1715, Viscount 1722 in the peerage of Ireland, and ultimately Earl of Egmont 1733. The earl died in 1748 survived by his wife, one son and two daughters.

While serving as MP for Harwich in the London Parliament Lord Perceval aided James Oglethorpe in establishing the colony of Georgia of which he became first President.
