A GEORGE III FRENCH PRISONER-OF-WAR BONE MODEL OF A ONE-HUNDRED-AND-FOUR GUN MAN-O'-WAR
A NAVAL TRADITION 'Although he had given up a number of seats on commissions including the Royal Fine Arts and the Ancient Monuments, he was still the Chairman of one that he took great pride in. This was the HMS Victory Technical Advisory Committee at Portsmouth, where he enjoyed sitting in the place of honour in the admiral's cabin and being piped on board, he had been connected with the great ship since 1954 when the Committee was set up and enjoyed his contact with shipwrights and the craftsmen of the naval dockyard. His responses to the problems of labour and skill for the reconstruction of Victory were typical. A group of admirals and naval historians asked him at one of the early meetings where they could find the expertise for the work. 'Gentlemen!' he announced to a surprised committee, 'The Press Gang! When you remove the plates from under the vessel', he told the Admiral superintendant, 'look for the tarred brown paper! Tarred brown paper, Professor?', came the amazed reply. 'Yes, from the re-fitting of 1801. It will still be there!' When the plates were removed the paper was found exactly as he had said.' S. Houfe, The Professor
