This corresponds to a Gillows design dated 1794 executed for J. Shuckburgh, Esq. and reproduced in L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Hertfordshire, 1995, fig. 41 and color plate 5. The 1794 design describes a table in satinwood with 'a broad purplewood band around the top' and shows the same loop brasses which are characteristic of the work of Gillows. Unlike the design, this particular desk is elaborately fitted with alphabetized drawers which is another feature found on other Gillow models.
