Lot Essay

The gracefully curved arched pediment is a form frequently associated to the work of the Golden Square cabinet-makers Messrs Mayhew & Ince; a design for a 'Library Bookcase' in the firm's The Universal System of Household Furniture (1762) features the same pediment, plate XX. A breakfront library bookcase of this model sold Christie's, London, 5 October 1972, lot 156A. Other examples with related pediments include a bookcase sold Christie's, London, 27 May 2010, lot 56 (£67,250 including premium) and another, sold Christie's, New York, 7 June 2013, lot 274 ($62,500 inc' prem').
