An inlaid ribbon wreathes the top of this pier-commode chest, which reflects the 1780's antique fashion popularised by Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, (1793). Pearls enwreath the golden bas-relief paterae which embellish the 'Grecian' hollowed front; while the projecting pilasters are flowered with Love's lilies. They issue from golden fillets that frame gothic-arched tablets, such as the Edinburgh firm of Young, Trotter and Hamilton introduced in 1796 on tables supplied for Holyrood (see D.Jones, The Edinburgh cabinet and chair-Maker' Book of Prices 1805 - 1825, Edinburgh, 2000, fig. 33).
