This wardrobe form on scalloped bracket feet, introduced around 1780, was popularised in 1788 by an engraved plate (no 97) in Messrs. A. Hepplewhite & Co.s, Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterers Guide, 1788. Its French hollow-cornered tablets of Messrs. Gillow of London and Lancaster best birching mahogany are accompanied by golden reed handles that frame flowered paterae according to their new pattern of the 1780s (see S. E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 2 vols. Woodbridge, 2008, vol. 11, pl. D9a).
