Crossbanded overall, the shaped rectangular top above four graduated long drawers, with satinwood and rosewood canted angles and splayed bracket feet, one back foot missing, the handles original, the underise with red wash and redundant nails, signed to the top of the backboards I Goodrick made this Newcastle 1797 and inscribed in pencil to the inside of the backboards, John Goodrick Cabinet Maker Newcastle July 31st 1797. At the time Earl St Vincent blocked the Spanish port of Cadis and Admiral Duncan blocked up the French with 19 ships of the line. Hussa the brave star of .... England for Ever. Hussa Hussa.

A John H. Goodrick is recorded as a Victualler, Shipbuilder and Cabinet Maker of King's Head in an 1823 Newcastle-on-Tyne Trade Directory.

The serpentine form and Grecian-scrolled leg can be compared to that of a 1789 pattern in the Gillow Archives (see L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, 1995, fig. 117). It also relates to the work of the Edinburgh cabinet-maker, John Biggar (see F. Bamford, Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers, 1987, pl. 17).
