Provenance
According to a barely legible Victorian label on the underside, this table was given to the writer's aunt Laura by Lady Madeline (?) Palmer who had inherited it from her mother the Duchess of Gordon. The last Duchess of Gordon (1794-1864) was a well-known Victorian evangelical but she did not have any children.
