The quality of this folio stand suggests its manufacture by a leading London cabinet maker. Closely related stamped examples survive from the renowned cabinet making firms, Holland and Son and Gillows (see Sotheby’s, London, 7 November 1997, lot 280 and 37 April 2001, lot 101 respectively) and a design a similar folio stand was subsequently published by William Smee and Son in their Designs for Furniture, 1850-55 (E. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, London, 1977, p. 550).
