A GERMAN BLUE, MANGANESE AND WHITE HELMET-SHAPED EWER
Circa 1745

With flat scroll and foliage handle, painted with a border of foliage-scrolls, diaper and shell ornament with pendant foliage, the lobed lower part and foot with pendant foliage and shells (very slight rim chips and flaking)

Lot Essay

A similar ewer was ascribed by Otto Reisebieter, op. cit., fig. 207, to Hannoversch-Münden on the basis of an M mark. However, stylistically the present lot is too early for that pottery. For a more convincing attribution to Fulda see Karl Schafft, 'Eine Fuldaer Helmkanne', Keramos, no. 94, 1981, pp. 39-40
