The characteristic marquetry interior of this superb casket relates to the oeuvre of Pierre Gole (1620-1685), who was appointed ébéniste du Roi in 1651. His marquetry furniture was prized for its 'fond d'yvoire à fleurs de diverses coulours', and he introduced techniques thus far unknown in France. The floral marquetry of contrasting woods on the drawer fronts of this casket relate to the decoration of a medaillier in the Louvre and a cabinet in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which are illustrated in Th. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Pierre Gole, ébéniste de Louis XIV, Dijon, 2005, [p. 56], fig. 14, pp. 65-67, figs. 26-29.
