Lot Essay

The coat-of-arms of the Dukes of Holstein-Sonderburg, which are related to the grand-ducal lineage of Oldenburg, shows Norway Schleswig, Holstein, Stormania and Dithmarschen, with an escutcheon of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst over all. The Dukes of Holstein-Sonderburg played their part in the infinitely complicated story of the Schleswig-Holstein succession, which involved both German and Danish interests.
