A German gilt-metal portable alarm timepiece
Hans Guot Buob (Gutbub), Strasbourg. Circa 1590
The engraved brass Roman dial with foliate engraved centre and later blued steel hand, the gilt-brass movement with six elaborate baluster pillars riveted to the front plate and pinned to the back plate, gilt-brass spring barrel with pinned end cap, later gut fusee, the going train with verge escapement and later steel and brass balance wheel, elaborately pierced and chased screwed balance cock, later set-up work to the spring, the back plate incised with concentric rings and stamped with the maker's mark *HANS* *GVOT* *BVOB*, also with a shield and five stars for the town of Strasbourg, the case elaborately cast, chased and engraved with two hunters giving chase with four dogs to a fleeing hare soon to be ensnared within a net tied between trees, all set within an elaborate landscape, later winged cherub head feet, the alarm assembly within a gilt-metal case on three feet fixing to the outer rim of the timepiece and with trip lever to the underside activated by the timepiece hand, the movement with four plain brass pillars of rectangular section and central steel spring, the alarm striking on a domed bell above secured at the top with a decorative gilt-brass strap
