LEIPZIG, UNIDENTIFIED MAKER'S MARK IPS IN OVAL, CIRCA 1680
Slightly tapering cylindrical, the body engraved with foliage sprays, acorns and flowers, on three ball feet, each capped with a detachable openwork foliage scroll, the detachable cover with ball finial above a pierced calyx, later-engraved with a presentation inscription below rim and underneath with initials 'H.L.H.V.T.', marked underneath
7.1/4 in. (18.4 cm.) high
11 oz. 16 dwt. (367 gr.)
The later inscription reads, 'PRESENTED TO The Hon'ble Herbert Lionel Vane Tempest BY HIS GODFATHER EDWARD EARL OF POWIS JULY 1871.'

There are two parcel-gilt silver pilgrim flasks in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, with the same maker's mark and town mark (museum no. 2008.543.19 and 2008.543.20). A two-handled German parcel-gilt silver dish with similarly pierced handles, with the same maker's mark and town mark, was sold Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 9 May 2005, lot 262.
