A German sporting crossbow and cranequin
LATE 16TH/EARLY 17TH CENTURY
With robust steel bow secured by its original cords wooden tiller swelling towards the middle, hollowed at the cheek-piece, and veneered in white staghorn on the top and bottom finely engraved with stag hunting scenes, and ebony inlaid with white horn stringing on the sides (small sections of ebony missing), bone cranequin lugs, iron lever trigger, iron suspension-ring, and adjustable iron peep-sight replacing the bolt-clip, the cranequin with large flat gear-box, lacking winding arm, minor losses, trigger mechanism and lugs with defects
