A gilt and painted straw-glazed figure of a soldier, Sui early Tang Dynasty (6th 7th century)
shown standing on a rockwork base, his well modelled hands held out in front, positioned to hold weapons, wearing layered armour over a pleated tunic and long skirt, the breast and back-plates bound with cords and secured over the shoulder with buckled straps with animal mask epaulets, his crisply moulded face with stern expression framed by the curved edge and protective flaps of his domed helmet -- 31¼in. (79.5cm.) high.

The results of thermoluminescence tests, Oxford C107d16, is consistent with the dating of this lot.

A similar figure, without the rockwork base, sold in Christie's New York, 3 June 1993, Lot 185.
