Unsigned, probably South German. Circa 1600
The case of typical form with stepped and foliate cast socle foot, the main body with gadrooned decoration and foliate pierced sound fret, the female herm handles secured to a central silver chapter ring with Roman numerals and foliate engraved centre, now with later gilt-metal orb engraved with Roman chapters held by later straps and surmounted by a martial figure, the movement with steel plates and steel square section pillars, the going train with spring barrel and restored stackfreed (lacking stopwork), verge escapement with restored foliot balance, the strike train with calibrated brass countwheel and strike on a bell covering the movement
