Lavishly lacquered in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane, nashiji and okibirame, designed with motifs from the chapter Hatsune ("The First Warbler") from the early eleventh-century novel The Tale of Genji showing the veranda of the Rokujo mansion surrounded by a lush garden and pond, the two characters for the word Hatsune, the first word of a poem about the New Year, embedded into the imagery in gilt metal in ashide-e (reed-picture) technique, the interiors of the hinged doors and the faces of the five drawers with scenery of Uji Bridge with willows and rock-filled bamboo baskets; elaborately fitted with incised silver mounts
