PROBABLY 18TH CENTURY
The perfumier box is decorated in openwork and repoussé to both sides with a mirror image of a peacock in flight over a large blooming peony with leafy stem and secondary buds, all enclosed within a rope twist and beaded border.

For an earlier related group of tear-drop shaped gold repoussé perfumiers dated as Song dynasty (960-1279) compare the pendant illustrated in Zhonguo Meishu Quanji, Arts and Crafts, vol.10, Silver, gold, glass and enamels, 1987, pl.41, decorated with two birds amidst flowers; compare also the Song dynasty openwork gold 'twin fish' pendant exhibited in J.J.Lally & Co's Silver and Gold in Ancient China, March 16 - April 14 2012.
