The Golden Horde khanate was established in the 13th Century A.D. in the far north-west corner of the Mongol empire. The artistic heritage of the area is rich, with many finely worked items in gold and silver surviving, including several bracelets similar to this.

For a discussion of Golden Horde jewellery, cf., J. Ogden and M. Kramarovsky The Art of Adornment: Jewellery of the Islamic Lands, The Khalili Collections vol. XVII (forthcoming).
