With the standard false eyebrows set high on the forehead, modelled in carved wood with gesso and pigment, signed in carved katakana on the reverse Tatsuemon with a kao, slight old wear

This mask is used in No dramas featuring female members of the Heian- period aristocracy, such as Matsukaze, Izutsu and Hagoromo. The name of the semi-legendary mask-carver Tatsuemon, thought to have lived in the thirteenth century, was frequently added to Edo period masks.
