Lot Essay

Depicting the traditional autumn slaughter of a pig, a ritual that originated as an offering to Ceres before the harvest. Hervouet and Bruneau, op. cit., p. 85, illustrate another saucer in this pattern; another teabowl and saucer, from the collection of J. Louis Binder, were offered Sotheby's London, 17 June 2003.
