Comprising 19 panels written in variants of shikasteh and naskh, most panels in black ink on cream paper, others in white, red and/or yellow on red or blue paper, one lacquered panel, text within cloud bands on gold ground, some panels with text written in various directions and crossing over, some panels with owners' seal impressions, one signed Mehr (?) and dated AH (1)121/1709-10 AD, one signed 'Abdullah, one signed Muhammad Hashim and dated Rabi' II AH 1188/June-July 1774 AD, one signed Visal and dated AH 1247/1831-32 AD, laid down between blue and gold borders on pink, green or gold-speckled orange card margins, minor staining

Muhammad Shafi' Shirazi, more commonly known by his nom de plume Visal, was one of the most renowned Persian calligraphers of the first half of the 19th century. He died in 1845-6 (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisan, Tehran, 1345-58, vol. III, pp.755-62).
