A Group of Five Small Lacquer Boxes
Muromachi-Edo period (16th-19th century)
Comprising a small square kogo (incense box) decorated with a blossoming plum tree beside a stream with bamboo water pipe and water container in gold and black lacquer with nashiji and kirigane embellishments, rims pewter and interiors nashiji; a rectangular covered box lacquered on the cover with an eagle on a branch in gold takamaki-e, the edges embellished with aogai, interior nashiji; a covered box with floral sprays and family crests in gold lacquer, gold foil, and silver on a dense nashiji ground, pewter rims, interior nashiji; a shallow covered square box designed with a scene of blossoming cherry trees near a river in gold and silver takamaki-e, e-nashiji and togidashi, the interior with a river and plants in togidashi; a rectangular box with chrysanthemums in gold and silver takamaki-e and gold foil on a gyobu nashiji ground interior chrysanthemums in similar decoration
