The choice of huanghuali with a particularly attractive grain, evident on the top of the present chest, makes it an especially desirable example of its type. Its slightly more slender proportions also give it an elegant and refined appearance.
Compare two similar huanghuali chests, dated to the 18th century, in the Liang Yi Collection, illustrated by C. Evarts in Liang Yi Collection: Small Objects, Hong Kong, 2007, pp. 104-5, nos. 55-6. A similar huanghuali seal chest, dated to the 17th/18th century, was sold in these rooms, 24-25 March 2011, lot 1377.
