Human figures in 12th and 13th century pottery are rare. Those that are found are normally musicians or more imperious figures than the present example. Glazed in an opaque turquoise colour, the characterisation seen in this figure is, as in the example of the other seated man, a rare display of humour from the 12th century potter.
