A Lacquer Writing Box (Suzuribako) and Document Box (Bunko)
Edo Period (19th Century)
Each of rectangular shape with rounded corners lacquered in hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi, silver lacquer, okibirame, e-nashiji and roiro with mandarin ducks in a riverscape with a background of roiro, lustrous hirame and nashiji, the writing box designed on the cover and sides with one duck perched on a rock on the left shore below pines, mandarin oranges and plum, its mate swimming in a river of black and gold togidashi, the underside of the cover decorated with chrysanthemums and bellflowers behind a bamboo lattice in gold and silver togidashi on a roiro-nuri ground applied with clouds of nashiji and gold and silver hirame which are repeated on the lower interior, this lower section fitted with a removable tray holding an inkstone lacquered on the sides in fundame, a parcel-gilt silver mizuire in the form of an elephant within a silver and gilt-silver saucer, two brushes, a paper-pricker and a paper knife in matching roiro and hirame cases, the latter two also mounted in silvered-metal; the large document box designed on the cover and sides with a variation of the landscape on the writing box in larger scale, the pair of ducks is perched on rocks to the right across the river underside from a willow, ferns, and small rocks, the pair of ducks is also shown on the short side facing front, and the river and shoreline enwrap the sides, on the underside of the lid is a larger version of the togidashi chrysanthemums and bellflowers of the writing box on a matching ground, here continued in the interior
