A LAPIS LAZULI SNUFF BOTTLE
PROBABLY IMPERIAL, 1760-1850
The bottle is of rounded, rectangular form with a cylindrical neck and recessed oval foot. The narrow sides are carved with stylized chi dragons. The stone is of deep bluish-purple tone with metallic pyrite inclusions.

Lot Essay

This piece of lapis exhibits an unusual dark intensity of color and evenness. The chi dragon is a typical motif found on Imperial products and often used as decoration on the side of bottles, as seen here.
