A LARGE AND RARE CAST IRON FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA
CHENGHUA PERIOD, DATED WUSHEN YEAR CORRESPONDING TO 1488
The figure is cast depicting Manjusri seated on a recumbent lion with its head turned backwards. The figure is depicted elaborately jewelled and with hair fashioned in a high chignon. There are traces of red and blue pigment. The reverse is cast with a dedicatory inscription, and dated to the thirteenth day of the sixth month of Chenghua emperor.

Lot Essay

The inscription to the reverse expresses the wish from General Ande for the safe delivery of their son by offering this piece to the Tienu Temple in Jingzhou in Hubei province.

Compare a cast iron figure of a male of similar size to the present lot bearing an inscription dating to the twenty-third year of Chenghua, corresponding to 1487, sold at Christie's London, 13 December 1976, lot 4.
